Principal Message - January 8th

Greetings Husky Families

Happy New Year!!!  Welcome to the second half of the 2023-24 school year at Jahn School of Fine Arts.  I am excited for the two remaining quarters.  What you will see are more opportunities for you to be on campus, as well as lots of student-led activities.  The remainder of this school year has our entire school community in mind and is student-focused.

With the start of the new calendar year, you will see a few changes.  Every change is centered around keeping you abreast of campus activities (academic and extracurricular).  One major change is around the home/school connection with our Second Step programming.  Beginning next week, you will be provided with an update of the Second Step themes for each grade level.  This will not replace the monthly SEL themes.  You will continue to receive those updates.  The Second Step programming will provide you with an additional route to support your children.

Our SEL theme for the month of January is Goal Setting/Growth Mindset.  Goal setting and having a Growth Mindset allows people to recognize their potential and learn from their challenges. It allows them to see the potential in others and maintain optimism about goal-setting, teamwork, self improvement and forgiveness.  A few texts to connect to this month’s SEL theme includes the following:

Pre-K through 2nd grade:
Jabari Jumps - Gaia Cornwall
The Things Lou Could Do - Ashley Spires
Whistle for Willie - Ezra Jack Keats

3rd - 5th grades:
New Kid - Jerry Craft
My Strong Wind - Neils Van Hove

6th - 8th grades:
Ghost - Jason Reynolds
George - Alex Gino
The Garbage King - Elizabeth Laird

During this week, there are a number of ways you can connect to the campus, which includes the following:
  1. A check-in meeting for our new Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP) will be held on Tuesday, January 9th at 3:30 pm.  While this event will be in person, the slide deck will be shared in next week’s community update (for those who can not attend).
  2. Our monthly LSC meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 10 at 6 pm.  This in-person event will be held in room 105.
  3. My Koffee With Kimbrough series resumes on Thursday, January 11th at 9am.  The topic of discussion will be:  Bullying:  What is it?  What it is not?
For further details around what’s happening on campus,  I encourage you to review the calendar sent home or our website for additional details.

Just a friendly reminder:  There will be no school on Monday, January 15th as we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Please take time to learn more about the great works of this leader.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do to support our students, staff, and this school.

Best,

Dr. Kimbrough
