Principal Message - June 19th

Greetings Husky Community

I trust and hope that your school break is off to a wonderful start.  I am already missing our students and staff.  With that, I am excited to share with you the significance of Juneteenth, an important federal holiday in United States history.

On June 19, 1895, Gordon Granger, a union general,  arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.  His announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued almost two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863, by United States President Abraham Lincoln.

The holiday is also called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day,” or “Emancipation Day.”

At Jahn, we believe in fostering a community that is diverse and inclusive.  Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history.

Let’s embrace Juneteenth as an opportunity to grow ourselves into better citizens.  This is a great opportunity for us to reflect, learn, and grow as a collective unit.  I also encourage you to celebrate with your families and take time to reflect on the importance of justice and equality.
