Principal Message - February 6th

Greetings Husky Community

As we continue to usher in the month of February, I would like to take this opportunity to shine some light on last week's Talent Show.  While I did not get to experience the event, I did hear from students, staff and parents on the wonderful event.  We look forward to hosting more events  where we are able to invite our families into the building.

February’s SEL theme is “Using Your Voice.”  With this theme, we encourage our students to be responsible decision makers and socially aware.  It has been great to see students sharing and speaking around topics that are of interest to them.  I am looking forward to seeing and hearing more around this theme during the month.

As you will see, there are a number of reminders and calendar updates below.  A couple of updates I would love to bring to your attention.  My first reminder is our Winter Wonderland.  This event will be held on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.  I look forward to seeing you there.  Another update to make note of is our February 16th FLEX day.   On this day, there will be an after school meeting for staff.  This meeting will interrupt all student programming for the afternoon.  Our apologies in advance for this adjustment.

This week is also National Counseling Week.  Our school counselor, Ms. Rendleman is truly an asset to our school community.  Not only does she provide support to our students, but she also played an important role during the first semester of this school year by serving as our case manager.  As a token of our appreciation, I am asking that we acknowledge her by the following:

Tuesday - Thursday:  Choose a day to send your student to school with a positive note of appreciation for Ms. Rendleman

Friday:  Send a flower to Ms. Rendleman

Kiss and Go:  In an effort to support student transitions during arrival, we are asking all  parents/guardians to drop off students and depart from the auditorium.  While we know that adults are concerned, I can assure you that we have a number of staff members who are supervising our students.

Inclement Weather:  Unless there are harsh weather conditions (below 45 degrees, rain or snow), students will remain outside during the morning.  As always, staff members will be outside to support student arrival.  When the weather conditions are bad, students will enter the building at 7:45 am and remain in the auditorium with their class until 8 am.  With the change of weather, we encourage students to dress accordingly.

Recess Weather Guidelines:  Ideally, recess should take place outdoors on school grounds as weather, space and safety permit. Outdoor recess allows children to get fresh air, provides an opportunity for children to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity and gives students more activity options than most indoor spaces. Outdoor recess is an important part of a child’s school day. Below are the guidelines for determining whether recess is held indoors or outdoors each day.

Weather

Recess Held

Above 32 degrees with or without a wind chill

Outdoors

15 to 32 degrees with or without wind chill

Principal Discretion

Below 15 degrees with or without wind chill

Indoors

Drop-offs and Traffic Route: For the safety of all, please do not drop students off in the crosswalk.  We have a number of curbside areas where students can be dropped off.

Please assist us by following the traffic pattern shared with families earlier this year.  We will attempt to be out there before and after school.   In cases where we are not, there should only be one way traffic on Wolcott heading north.

School Fees:  Our Local School Council approved student fees for this year of $75 per student (with a maximum of three students per family).  School fees will be used to cover supplies, books, and SEL activities.  Students in Pre-K are not required to pay fees, but can donate an amount, if they choose.
